CarbonBlock – Project Luna

"CarbonBlock helps us to further decarbonize our products and strengthen our sustainability strategy – for environmentally friendly products and a better future."
Achim Hüttner, Managing Director, project luna object interieur GmbH

project luna produces high-quality, modular, B2B interior and exterior solutions. Customers include Maybach, Hugo Boss, Dior and BMW. Since the beginning, the brand has stood for high quality, exclusive design, craftsmanship and environmental awareness.

Requirement

To meet the increasing customer requests for emission values of their products, project luna has calculated the product carbon footprint of two products together with CircularTree and their SaaS-Platformfrom CarbonBlock:

  • Bench made of larch wood, concrete stringers and steel bolting
  • Table made of larch wood, concrete stringers and steel bolting

Solution

The product carbon footprint resulted from the determination of the company's own emissions, which are made up of the sustainable heating system as well as the self-generated electricity through their photovoltaic systems. The heating air is generated by a ventilation system with heat recovery and biomass heating, which is fed by extracted chips, dust and plastics such as melamine and ABS from production waste.

A special feature is that the products represent a CO2 sink over their lifetime, since the carbon bound in the wood does not escape into the atmosphere. For the bench, the value was 49.5 kg per product, for the table 67.8 kg per product. However, the storage of CO2 in product form is always temporary and limited to the lifetime of the product. For permanent CO2 storage, it must be ensured after the end of the product's service life that the products are either reused without loss (circular economy) or that the carbon they contain is permanently stored.

In CarbonBlock, the materials of all suppliers for both products were also analyzed. By breaking down the CO2 values on a component and supplier basis, the greatest levers for further reductions in the product carbon footprint were defined. Using Sustainaccount's machine learning process, emission values for the components were obtained from various LCA databases. CarbonBlock enables a future and interoperable exchange of emission data between project luna, customers and suppliers and provides information on the corresponding values.

Result

Not only was it possible to certify the extremely low product carbon footprint, but with the help of the innovative CarbonBlock software solution, emission values based on the WBCSD PACT standard could also be shared with customers. Further decarbonization of the product and the integration of additional suppliers is planned for the future. In addition, the approach will be applied to other products in the project luna portfolio.
