ESTAINIUM Rulebook 2025 – Your Guide to effective and trustworthy Carbon Compensation
As a global community committed to drive sustainable supply chains for a prosperous future and economic growth, ESTAINIUM develops practical tools to help organizations advance their decarbonization strategies. With the Estainium Rulebook 2025, we are proud to release an open-access guide that brings clarity, structure, and best practices to the complex Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM).
A Structured Guide for Carbon Compensation:
The Rulebook is designed as a practical, step-by-step guide with a focus on quality and transparency. It addresses persistent market challenges – such as low-quality offsets, inconsistent standards, and risks of greenwashing – by providing clear criteria, actionable tools, and individual user journeys for different types of carbon credit buyers.
At its core is the 3-Phase Decision Tree:
· Initial Assessment – Identify sustainability maturity and goals
· Carbon Offset Project – Select verified, high-quality projects using strict quality and transparency criteria
· Finalization/Retire – Purchase, verification, and prevention of double counting
The Rulebook goes beyond theory, offering:
· 10 different user journeys for different buyer typologies ranging from CSOs to institutional investors.
· A framework & registry overview that compares leading frameworks (e.g., SDGs, SBTi, ICVCM) and major carbon registries (e.g., Verra, Gold Standard, ACR).
· Practical recommendations on project quality, regional relevance, independent advice, and transparent communication.
The Rulebook grew out of ESTAINIUM’s Working Group III – Carbon Capture, Use, Storage and Compensation. Instead of leaving organizations to tackle these challenges alone, the group collaborated to develop joint solutions – driving sustainable supply chains for a prosperous future and long-term economic growth.
